Read Romans 8:22-25
“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” – Paul (Romans 8:22 NIV)
With all of the talk about the end of the world and signs of the coming end times that fill many shelves at the local Christian bookstore, I think that it is easy for us to miss the point of Jesus’ return in the midst of the details. So many Christians want to debate and discuss the end times while missing the fact that the point of end times theology is to create a longing for the return of Jesus who will “make all things new” (Revelation 21:5).
In Romans 8, Paul speaks of a longing for redemption. I really think that this is the intent of much of the end times writings of the Bible. As we see the groanings of creation and the groanings in our own hearts and lives, this should cause us to long for the return of Jesus. As we long for His return, we should make ourselves ready for our heavenly Daddy to come home.
Many of us have seen pictures and videos of soldiers returning from war to their families. It is with great joy and excitement that the children run into the arms of their father. The father warmly embraces the child knowing that deep down the world is in one small way as it should be.
Jesus will one day return to make the entire universe as it should be. Creation living in line with the Creator in His perfect plan to glorify Himself. This is the hope that Christians have. Though we experience a foretaste of the grace that we have been given through the gospel, one day we will experience the fullness of the hope that we have in Jesus the Rescuer. Let us long and let us live in light of that hope!
Lord Jesus, Help me to long for your return. Help me to seek to live as Your beloved child in the midst of a world that has forgotten Your name. Give me grace and patience as I wait for the fullness of Your promise in the gospel.. Amen.
Thought for the Day
Living in the light of eternity creates a longing for what truly matters.
